Pa. Alternatives to Abortion Program Offers Women Another Choice

When a woman faces an unplanned pregnancy, she may believe that abortion is her only option.

Real Alternatives is there to assures her it isn’t.

Real Alternatives is Pennsylvania’s innovative alternatives to abortion program, which offers caring, confidential support to pregnant mothers and their families. Women Have a Right to Know!

Founder and CEO Kevin Bagatta spoke with the 700 Club in an interview that aired Tuesday. He said, “There were surveys done of women who’d had an abortion. And they said if one person had helped them during the crisis pregnancy, they wouldn’t have had the abortion.”

Real Alternatives centers across the Commonwealth offer that help to women in crisis. It helped Jamie, an unemployed mother who discovered she was pregnant with her fourth child right after her husband left her.

Hundreds of thousands of women like her have received support for themselves and their families at Real Alternatives centers. The state-wide program offers emotional support through counseling and physical support through various means — from temporary shelter to diapers.

Western Pa. Abortion Center Temporarily Stops Abortions

Fewer abortions are happening in Pennsylvania today.

An abortion center run by Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania has stopped offering surgical abortions while it renovates its facility to comply with a new law. Sadly, the facility plans to begin doing abortions again when the renovations are finished. Read the news story here.

For this short time of renovations, we hope and pray that the women who were thinking about getting an abortion there this month will consider other options – keeping her baby or giving the baby up for adoption.

Pregnant women in Pennsylvania have access to support thanks to programs like Real Alternatives and other pregnancy resource centers. These community centers offer resources to women while they are pregnant and after they give birth. Learn more about pregnancy centers and resources available in your area here.

November also is National Adoption Month. Learn more about adoption in Pennsylvania here.

What youth don’t know about life issues, resources

The pro-life movement has put a lot of stock on its young people to carry on the fight for life. Young faces dominate the crowds at the March for Life in Washington, D.C., every January. They form pro-life school clubs. They support crisis pregnancy centers and pray outside abortion centers.

But with many of today’s youth, there is a disconnect.

A recent poll by Students for Life found that a large number of youth do not know much about abortion issues and alternatives. Read more here.

Some of the results were startling. Kristian Hawkins, executive director of Students for Life of America, wrote:

“What they don’t know is literally killing this generation as 58 percent admitted that they didn’t know where resources were in their community or campus to support a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy who didn’t want to undergo an abortion.”

What’s more, 66 percent said they had a “favorable” view of Planned Parenthood, and 48 percent said they did not know whether Planned Parenthood offered abortions. Three in five students also believe the controversial “morning-after” pill should be available via vending machines.

Hawkins concluded that we need to do a better job educating young people about the right to life. Resources are out there. It’s just a matter of reaching out and sharing them.

In Pennsylvania, one of the best resources for youth is Real Alternatives. The alternatives to abortion program is made up of support networks throughout the Commonwealth that help women facing unplanned pregnancies. Through Real Alternatives, women are offered the assistance they need to give birth to and raise a child.

The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation also offers numerous educational resources on topics such as abortion, life before birth, Planned Parenthood and more. Real Alternatives and local crisis pregnancy centers typically offer their own posters and brochures, too. Find out more here.

Start by sharing these things with the people around you – friends, church congregation, children, grandchildren. Then, ask to speak to your church youth group, or hang up posters on community bulletin boards. Post the Real Alternatives website and hotline on Facebook or Twitter. Get involved in your local pro-life chapter.

The resources are there, and our youth need them. So, please don’t assume they know. Take a minute and share!

Abortions on the Decline in PA

Pro-life advocates are hopeful because the latest abortion statistics show that the total number of abortions declined in the Commonwealth in 2010. Pennsylvania’s abortion totals would be much higher were it not for the state’s Alternatives to Abortion program, administered by Real Alternatives. The program provides everything from day care referrals to diapers to empower women to choose life for their children. While even one abortion is a tragedy, we are encouraged that the abortion rate is declining in our state.
