How to Explain Why We Believe What We Believe about Life

Last Saturday, I participated in a very encouraging youth event organized by the St. Gabriel Respect Life Committee in Carlisle.

CupcakeOne thing that really struck me about the event – from the speaker’s talk to the students’ comments — was the vital importance of teaching young pro-lifers to understand and articulate our position on life.

Guest speaker Missy Martinez from Students for Life said many young people are in the “mushy middle” when it comes to abortion. Many haven’t thought a lot about the issue.

Martinez encouraged students to start conversations with their peers about abortion. She laid out the basic pro-life position and discussed how pro-lifers can have civil, reasonable conversations with people around us. Here are the basics of the pro-life position:

We believe every human being has an equal right to life. Modern science has proven that from the moment of conception preborn babies are distinct human beings. Therefore, we believe preborn babies also should have an equal right to life.

We believe there is no significant difference between a preborn human being and a born human being that makes it ok to kill the preborn human. A preborn baby is different from an adult in size, level of development, environment, and degree of dependency; however, the differences are not significant enough to make it ok to kill a preborn baby. Born humans also have these differences.

We believe that circumstances such as poverty or wantedness are not good reasons to kill a preborn baby in the same way that circumstances are not a good reason to kill a toddler. Both the preborn baby and the toddler are human beings who should have an equal right to life.

These points are foundational to our cause. Every pro-lifer should memorize them and be willing to discuss them. They explain what we believe and why it’s so important.

Please consider sharing this article. Or share this short video “Defending Your Pro-Life Views in Two Minutes or Less,” which explains the same points.

How One Student’s Pro-Life Speech Impacted Millions for Life

In 2009, 12-year-old Lia Mills wowed the pro-life community with a simple YouTube video of her school speech about abortion.

Lia spoke so articulately and passionate about protecting life that her video immediately spread across the globe. Watch it here. LiaMills1

“What if I told you that, right now, someone was choosing if you were going to live or die?” she says in the video. “Thousands of children are right now in that very situation. That someone is their mother. And that choice is abortion.”

Today, her video has more than 2.4 million views on YouTube, but her impact has been so much more than mere numbers.

According to a 2012 article in Toronto Life, Lia has received many “thank you” notes from pregnant women who watched her video and decided not to have an abortion. She also travels throughout the U.S. and Canada speaking and inspiring thousands of pro-lifers.

Lia’s exceptional story is an example of why our organization hosts an annual Pro-Life Oratory Contest for students. We believe in encouraging young people to use their voice for life. When young people speak up with passion and sincerity, people listen, and babies and their moms are spared from the pain of abortion.

Our contest is open to students in 9th to 12th grades. Students must write their own original speeches on the topic of abortion, euthanasia, or stem cell research, videotape the speech, and submit it to us by April 15, 2015. For details, email lifelines@paprolife.org or click here.

Please encourage students you know to participate. Like Lia, they can make a big impact for life!

Encourage Students to Enter Pro-Life Contests This Year

This school year, as students consider topics for their school projects, why not suggest they write about a pro-life issue? When they are finished they can enter their project in a pro-life contest for a chance to win cash and other prizes.

Student pro-life contests encourage young people gain a better understanding of pro-life Stop Abortion Mandatesissues such as abortion or euthanasia. That’s why the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation organizes two annual contests for students in our state.

The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Essay Contest is open to students in 7th to 12th grade. Students must write an original essay about one of the following pro-life topics: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, or embryonic stem cell research. Cash prizes will be given to the top winners. The deadline to enter is March 3. For more information, click here.

In the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Oratory Contest, high school juniors and seniors must write and give an original 5-7 minute speech on a pro-life topic. Students will compete at the regional level before moving on to states. The top prize will be a trip to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the national contest in June. For more information, click here.

Our national affiliate, National Right to Life, just started a new Student Video Contest for high school and college-age students. Check out last year’s winning video here. For rules and more information, click here.

The University Faculty for Life also sponsors a contest for undergraduate and graduate students. Students may submit original, pro-life compositions in one of three categories: creative writing, literary criticism, or research. The deadline to enter is May 24. For more information, email DrJeffKoloze@att.net .

Help spread the word about these contests, and encourage students to speak out for life.
